TRC's Parents for Parents Support Group to meet

Parents for Parents, a support group for family members of people with special needs, will hold its next meeting from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 6, at The Resource Center’s Staff Training Center at 92 Fairmount Avenue in Jamestown.

Parents for Parents is a monthly parent/caregiver support group organized by The Resource Center. The group, directed by a licensed master social worker, connects and supports families of individuals with special needs. The group offers support, information, speakers and presentations on topics pertaining to parents and caregivers in Chautauqua County. This is an opportunity for parents and caregivers to come together to discuss common triumphs, challenges, issues and concerns.

This month’s meeting features a woman who will share her experiences of growing up in a household with a brother and two sisters who had developmental disabilities. Come and hear Jennifer Volk’s story and her perspective on the expectations/assumptions of her parents; the feelings and emotions generated; the frustrations and triumphs experienced; and the transition and growth everyone learned from living with one another.

Following the presentation, members will discuss whether there is interest in forming sibling support groups – one for adult siblings and an after-school group for children.

The regular parent support meeting will follow the presentation and discussion on sibling support groups. Light refreshments will be served.

New members are always welcome to join the Parents for Parents support group. Meetings are free, and refreshments are served. For more information contact Tess Kerzner, TRC’s social services clinical specialist, at 661-1057 or E-mail: trctkerzner@windstream.net
